What’s best for me
Is not what’s best for you
I have to make a choice
Because my job
Is many things
And one of those
Is to make you
(Or afford you the chance
to make yourself, I should say)
The best
You
That you can be
I admit
I don’t always want to
I have preferences of my own
That don’t align with yours
At times, I could
Ask you to make
A sacrifice, yourself
That’s society
That’s civilization
Because we all do things
We don’t want to do
For the greater good
Or just because it’s nice to be nice
(This doesn’t work
If everyone’s selfish)
I guess what I’m trying to say is that
What’s best for you
Is best for me
If it makes you better
Which doesn’t mean
I won’t be sad
And doesn’t mean
I wouldn’t move heaven and earth
If I could
To avoid this
But some things are not unavoidable
They just shouldn’t be avoided
So go down the path
I will stand and wave
And keep my tears
For when you can’t see them
