The veil is thin
Between Earth and Sky
Beneath my back, outstretched
This is ecstasy
Warm embrace above
Wintergreen chill below
Marshmallow softness cradles my neck
And I swing in a subtle breeze
As dappled sun paints sugar maples
White and yellow-orange
While this hollow is shadowed and cool
All black bark and brown needles
Bordering the broad swath of clover
That once was grass
Somewhere, a rabbit twitches
In anticipation of a green buffet
And the hostas shiver
But heavy afternoon eyes
Cannot stay open
Warm, warm, cradled above the floor
Rocking like the first week
The first month
Gentle and carefree
In crisp air
The chrysalis, silent
Waiting for the evening to awake
